Thorfinn, a boy living in Iceland, longs for adventure and is eager to know more about the world. He dreams of a land of paradise called Vinland that he hears about from the adventurer Leif, while he leads his peaceful life with this father Thors, a former warrior. One day, Thors saves a runaway slave and sets a series of events in motion. This is the story of a true warrior in an age of turmoil.

In the year 1002, the war between England and Denmark was intensifying. One day, the Jomsvikings pay a visit to Thorfinn's village in order to bring back Thors, their former commander, to prepare for the impending battle. Thors is forced to join the war in order to protect the villagers from being taken hostage, and must face his accursed past in order to save his family and his village.

Askeladd withdraws temporarily from the war against England. While searching for a new source of income, he encounters a skirmish among the Franks and hatches a plot to steal their treasure. Askeladd sends 16 years old Thorfinn, who has grown up into a cold-hearted Viking, ahead as a messenger.

Einar, a young man from northern England lives with his mother and younger sister in a quiet farming village. One day the village is destroyed in a Viking attack, and Einar's life changes dramatically.

Einar and Thorfinn are told to convert a wild forest into a wheat field; and if they succeed, they will have the chance to buy their own freedom.

Thorfinn and Einar find themselves in a sticky situation with some vicious men claiming to be "warriors". Thorfinn is put in major danger as one of the men finds newfound excitement in making him beg for his life.

After everything that happened, Einar asks Thorfinn if he's ever fought in a war — and if he's ever killed a man.

After the death of his father young prince Canute is forced into the battlefield to establish control over England in order to achieve his goals. But it proves to be more of a challenge than he thought it would be which results in him deciding to use more cruel and sinister methods to achieve his goals.

Thorfinn and Einar are working themselves to the bone to clear the forest, but there's only so much they can do without the help of horses.

Thieves have been stealing food from Ketil's farm. Meanwhile, Ketil's eldest son Thorgil returns home.

Thorfinn has nightmares almost every night, but he can never remember what he dreamed about — and that bothers him.

Thorfinn is caught off guard and knocked unconscious in a fight with the servants. In the midst of this, he had a dream in which he sees his father and his arch-enemy. How will they respond to the current state of Thorfinn?

Finally, after three long years, Einar and Thorfinn chop down the final tree in the forest. At the same time, Canute, who became the conqueror of England, is visiting Jelling, the royal capital of Denmark.

With Canute's newfound additional throne and the land of Denmark, he aims to fund his armies with drastic means. Ketil meets with Lief Ericson who finds out he has a slave named Thorfinn. Ketil pays tribute to the new king Canute.

Olmar feels insulted by Canute's messenger and, encouraged by his older brother Thorgil, takes matters into his own hands.

A slave kills his master and all his sons, as a result, a bounty amounting to three horses is placed on his head. The old master collapses tending the field and must be taken care of due to his poor health.

Gardar, the runaway slave who killed his master has come to Ketil's farmstead to free Arnheid, his wife. Snake aims to subdue Gardar while Einar wishes to aid Gardar by violent means, Thorfinn, however, pursues a diplomatic solution.

Arnheid comes to the fortress where Gardar is imprisoned. She wants to see her husband and treat his injuries.

Having realized Gardar is escaped, Einar and Thorfinn make their way to the old master's home to find Arnheid. The two find her and both decide to help her and her husband escape, with the three colluding in a plan to help save Gardar.

Snake strikes quickly, surprising Thorfinn with his speed and agility. As he lies wounded, Gardar thinks back on the life he shared with Arnheid.

After returning home to his farm, an exhausted Ketil starts searching for Arnheid, only to find out what happened in his absence.

Amidst the confusion of a peasant uprising, Thorfinn and the others try to escape, carrying a severely injured and pregnant Arnheid.

As Thorfinn and Einar head for their escape, Arnheid regains consciousness and asks where they are going — and if there are slaves and wars there, too.

The battle has left heartbreaking casualties in its wake. Though Thorgil and Ketil's wife want to continue the fight, Canute demands their surrender.

Thorfinn is determined to face the brutal challenge of having to endure one hundred punches in order to speak with Canute. His father's words resonate with him as he undergoes this brutal but necessary task.

Thorfinn and Einar have said their piece, but Canute stubbornly refuses to give up Ketil's Farm. Then, Thorfinn breaks the standoff with a decision.

After negotiating peace, upon his return to Iceland, Thorfinn reunites with his long-lost family after a 16-year separation, and the encounter sparks within him a bigger inspiration to establish a nation in the bountiful lands of Vinland.
